The Louisiana Purchase gave our young nation thousands of future citizens whose heritage found its roots in France, in French-speaking Canada, in Germany, in Spain, in Africa and in the Caribbean. By fate, these settlers, slaves and refugees became American, yet still retained their culture in the Louisiana territory. Their story has been inscribed in their newspapers, their books, their manuscripts and their songs; it is a rich and varied account of their lives in the new world. It is their experience, expressed in languages which are less spoken today, that La Bibliothèque Tintamarre, Les Cahiers du Tintamarre, and Les Éditions Tintamarre explore, using the words of the people who lived this experience and who are still living it today.
Today, after three hundred years, Louisiana can still claim a rich and varied literature. Its vitality shows us that a language is composed of all the realities and languages that have poured their voices into it. Thus, Louisiana’s French, composed of the Cajun, Creole, First Nation, and immigrant heritage, can offer a dazzling defense of American francophonie. Our immigrant novelists, First People storytellers, Creole singers, and Cajun poets all have their truths to tell. Their contemporary work proves that the current generation will endow the next with its own Francophone voice to discover.
